Hi folks, Anthony and Curtis here and we are going to tell you about a memorable session we had in which all our dreams come true. Now we have been testing the new catch and Release/ Innovate baits bait called CR1 for the last few months and it was time to put its awesome reputation to the test on a water that would potentialy put a new pb on the bank for us. With a gap in the work schedule we decided to fish pavyotts mill lakes in yeovil midweek before the easter rush. Now, before we go any further we had done some reasearch on the venue and understand its not everybody’s cup of tea, never the less, we booked hoping for a new pb each and a bit of a social. So we set off at 5am from swansea making the 156 mile journey down to Somerset
As we arrived at the gates the owners greeted us and we went into the cabin to see the layout and find out details on the swim etc. ‘its fishing realy tough though lads, it aint done a fish all week with only 1 other lad catching 2 doubles last week’. Our optimism droped before even seeing the swim, ‘lets see what you welsh boys can do’ the bailiff mumbled as we walked off to the van. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!!!
We drove around to the lake and set up on peg11. Knowing the lake was fishing tough and the wind was savage we picked our likely looking spots. I decided to flick 3 single blow back rigs out on the spots and curt decided to flick 3 stiff hinge rigs to his spots. Simply if one rig decided to do the do then the other would switch. After 30 mins of moving the gear into the swim BEEEEEEEPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!! My left hand rod was away. After a short battle under the rod tip, a new uk pb was in the net, an absolute minter to! Job done in 30 mins. I really couldn’t believe my luck however she went 32lbs and all thanks to the cr1.
What a start and i literaly spent the next 4 hours smiling from ear to ear, just an unreal feeling. What a start to our trip now to try and get somthing bigger. Few hours went passed and nothing happening other than the savage weather smashing into our set ups. Out of nowhere curt’s left hand rod let out 2 beeps and he reeled down and hit into fish no1 for him and 2nd of the trip for us both. After it giving him a right old going over a mint scale perfect common was in the folds of the landing net and yet again another new uk pb. This one went 24lbs happy days.
Usual banter and the congratulations messages came flying through and we were both buzzing. One fish on the bottom rig and one on the Stiff hinge. Game on!!
After a quiet night with nothing happening we woke up to milder weather and sunshine with no wind. We both thought this was much better conditions for the fish to feed.
So our tactics changed from singles to scattering around 30 cr1 baits over the top of each rod. The day pretty much passed without a single bleep, however at 5pm and out of the blue my middle rod melted away, with a 10 minute battle and a few mutterings of ‘this is a decent fish’ a baby common of 13.8lb rolled over the net cord. We both looked at each other and burst out laughing. Crazy, but very very welcome! After some stills of the handsome chap we sliped him back to his watery home!
That night, we decided on a bit of a social so we had a curry and a few beers before hiting the sack early doors!
At 7am curt’s receiver let out a single BEEEEEP we looked out to find his left hand bobbin had droped back. He wound into the fish and bang we were in again. Here is were I will hand you over to curt.
This fish wasn’t messing about and it gave me a right good kicking! Going from one side of the swim to the other and staying deep. Deep down I had a feeling this was a big fish but I didn’t say a word of fear it might drop off. However the hook hold held strong and she went into the net 2nd time of asking. Upon peering into the mesh I could tell that she was going to be a new pb. On the scales she went a touch over 28.8 and we were just made up! Not bad for 2 lads that have never fished the lake before and considering it was tough going i thought we had done pretty good!
Going into our 3rd day the weather looked bang on, best of the session so far surely more fish were on the cards. The wind direction changed and it looked spot on for a bite or two. Sadly we sat behind motionless rods for the next 12 hours. Cant complain to much tho……….
