The Chod Rig as we know it, has been well documented over the years and has for many Carp Anglers, rightly so, has been the rig of choice. But the down side to the conventional Chod rig is its overuse, making the carp more aware of it. So if your able to make a slight alteration and think outside of the box I have found you are more likely to reap the rewards.
This brings me to the Advanced Chod Rig !
I first came to look at the rig when I was fishing a clear, low stocked water
where the fish loved to patrol the margins. I observed them swimming along over the top of a
shallow bar and continue along the patrol routes. As the water was so clear I could see what they were doing. Subsequently, I thought this would be the ideal place to intercept them. I opted to use a chod rig as this would be ideal for fishing over the top of the bar. I set the trap and waited. It didn’t take long before a shoal congregated. One fish slowly took the free offerings and edged closer to my waiting rig.
The fish slowly nosed down onto the chod rig but was suddenly spooked and swam away. As I stood puzzled I contemplated what had just happened. So I reeled in and the only conclusion i could come to is that the fish must have caught sight of the protruding hook, due to the conventional rig having the pop-up sitting on the rear of the hook. Well this got me thinking of how I could present a pop-up on a chod rig but at the same time hide the hook underneath. Once again Taska products offered the solution with their Mini Hook Ring Swivels and combining this with a sliding reverse snell knot, provided a turning point for the creation of the Advanced Chod Rig.
For the next two years i continued to test the rig with outstanding results. Only by chance I found that not having any restriction or weight on the back of the hook, the rig becomes unstable. Its a little like a rear wheel pallet truck its always looking to pivot from the front allowing the rear to rapidly spin around. I returned to the gin clear pit and had an amazing year of successful fishing.
However, its no wonder rig or a fishing innovation. Frank Warwick has that honour for inventing the chod rig. I would like to see it as a another option in the inventory.
