second success
I have been really feeling good about my fishing recently, specially since bagging albeit not the biggest but my first carp of 2016. After working solid and giving fishing a break for a week or so, I am back out on the bank in this slightly warmer weather.
I have spent a few evenings making my own wafter Hookbaits as I have had a bit of success on them recently. I thought it would be a shame to use shop bought baits when I can make my own to go on the business end.
The last weekend of January’s soon come around. I had the opportunity to do a quick night or a short evening session after work, boy did I jump at the chance. I left work on time and made it to the park lake by 5 o’clock. Originally I had wimped out of fishing it because of the remnants of a burnt out Audi. After seeing the carcass of the car, it got my mind ticking. This particular occasion I thought sod it I’ll go back and fish.
I got to one of the better pegs on the lake, one which has produced a lot of fish for me and set about getting the rods out. I had the struggle of pushing the barrow around with a flat wheel on the barrow.
With the rods wrapped up at 19 wraps, I lined up with a far margin feature and both went out first time. 10 spombs of bait scattered over the top and I was rocking! I sat back and fired up the Ridgemonkey and devoured a pulled pork roll washed down with a nice warm cuppa. I was really confident as the rods went out first time and had a fair bed of bait out and was especially confident in the home made hook baits.
6 o’clock soon came round and a twitchy bite was received by a bream but we won’t talk about that! I unhooked the fish and flicked the rod back out and topped up with some more Key boilies. Countless cups of tea later and the right hand rod pulled up tight and say there, the tip was buckling over and I was in! I met a solid resistance and boy did the fish fight hard! I soon had the fish spitting water and slipped over the net cord. Admittedly I did a little dance as if I had broken the world record as the fish was caught on my home made wafters. The fish spun the scales to bang on 20lb, I could tell as soon as she was sulking in the net she was a nice fish. Trophy shots done and she was slipped back to fight another day.
The rod was soon back out with a fresh hook bait and bag of cultured stick mix and I sat back grinning like a Cheshire Cat! The rig was my trusted wafter rig almost like a claw, basic 7 turn knot less knot, curved shrink tubing and a size four extra sharp Wide Gape hook. The rig was around 5 inches. I have gone for a short rig as it seems to hook the fish a lot quicker.
I was soon loading the barrow and heading back to the car. The weather made s turn for the worse and got a bit blustery.
Until next time,
Ross.
