The guests arrived on the end of a hot spell over in France, nice and early for there weeks fishing on Furious, filled with excitement but also knowing the weather could be against them with the amount of none stop rain forecasted. After a rather amusing draw between the lads the swims were chosen and they were off.
John drew first and decided to fish peg 5. Peg 5 is a corner swim that runs parallel with the far bank of pegs 1 and 2. Where as peg 3 is opposite peg 4. Peg 5’s main area of attack should be (and was) the left hand margin, it’s a treasure trove of canopies, steep drop offs, shelves and overhanging trees. It just looks the dogs danglies!
John fished a pink pop up on the margin rod as there is carpet weed and a lot of chod in areas.
(As the weather gets hotter the lake will become weedier so please make sure all lines and end gear is upto the job of landing these stunning old fish) John had a couple of runs but the carp were getting the better of him until early morning his left hand rod screamed off and after a strong deep battle a good looking mirror graced the mat.
31lb 7oz of possible uncaught furious carp! Awesome. John was actively searching for any sign of the fish but they wouldn’t seem to push up towards him, he tried different tactics and ended with roaming around some zigs. After a couple of casts a short flick out with a 6ft zig resulted in a take but unfortunately a hook pull at the net. Johns advice for future anglers fishing lake furious –
“Don’t overdo it, build up the swim slowly and let the fish feel confident.”
Not the best of weeks but with the conditions, John was pleased and can’t wait to be back on the banks of furious.
Liam drew into peg 1. Peg 1 is the shallower end of the lake with a lovely right hand bay and margins to the right and opposite, open water bars and deep holes. It’s a great swim with a complete scope of water, for every fishing possibility. Liam fished to the opposite margin and the right hand margin. He fished pink krill pop ups and started catching from the off, a warm wind pushing into his bay had the fish rolling and topping all over him. Liam’s alarms were alive with liners before the action, the fish were there and they were hungry! He started off with a 5lb tench, not wanted but a welcome sign to know your rigs are placed perfect and hooking ability is spot on. After the tench it wasn’t long before a speeding take had him on the rods and latched onto an angry fish! For those of you that haven’t caught sturgeon before it’s a heart stopping battle complete with air shows like a marlin! Deep runs and sheer power! Again not the target fish but every angler should feel the power of these fish! And at only 20lb+ The strength is unbelievable.
Back to the carp now and after watching the fish roll Liam banked 4 carp in the last couple of days. 4 x 30lb + mirrors. Off the mark with 30lb 14oz shortly followed by 31lb 10oz, 36 and a 37 to finish! Lee fished in peg two which is situated in the centre of the lake and commands a lot of open water features and a fair cast to the opposite bank which is also full of different options including shallow water, canopies and deep water. Early on in the session Lee lost two good fish but couldn’t seem to buy a bite after that, although he knew the fish were holding up in his area. After a frustrating day or so Lee started to get in on the fish, first with a 16lb shortly followed by a 30lb a 22lb and finished with a 28lb. Lee’s advice – first impressions of the lake, absolutely stunning.
Weeks fishing started ok but after losing two fish the fishing turned slow, it was frustrating as I could see the fish in my area. Stick to your spots throughout the week as at some point the fish will visit them, I had four runs but could’ve easily had 10, it took me a week to get to grip with the lake and already I can’t wait to get back.
If you have a session booked in at furious, please work with us to keep your swims clean during and after your stay, bins are provided (recycling and rubbish). Also as always fish care is paramount, any wounds or scabs should be treated with a carp care kit. Stick to all fishery rules. Enjoy your stay and respect the land and lake so others can enjoy there stay.
